Analyse Of Music Genres - Miss Georgiou

Many music videos are able to display a particular visual effect to there required audience. The audience are able to fit a narrative with there favourite music songs, this is where they are able to see the way the artist has interpreted there music as a whole adding a more visual way of relating to the artist. Visual effects can also be a way where an artist can show off in there video porting how expensive and technically advanced there overall vision is. Newer artists that aim to be a main role model to a younger more influential audience are often able to create trends that may be able to represent them in a more popular light and likeable way.

Drake is a very popular artist that is known world wide. Throughout his music video 'Over' we see many different typical conventions of the rap genre. These can be displayed through the different micro elements. Such as cinematography, miss-en-scene and editing. The rap genre is overall sometimes full of anger and other emotions. This can often connote how much facial expressions can be manipulated into appearing a lot more angry and having other things such as the way the lighting is represented to display an unnatural setting.

The mise-en-scene in this scene can support the conventional side to the rap genre. In the image taken from his music video 'over' we can see he has a crisp white top and jacket on. This makes him appear very fresh and clean, connoting his wealth through the ability to display this particular clothing the audience and fan base watching this will admire his style of looking renewed. They may be inclined to follow his particular style and be able to relate to him by almost copying his sense of style so they themselves will be praised and respected as appearing clean and fresh cut. In addition to this other aspects of his clothing included his accessories we are able to see him wearing a gold chain around his neck. Again this suggests his wealth and how much money he earns often leaving the audience envious of his particular style and affordability. This is conventional to the rap genre as it enables them to be able to show off there wealth which is something many rap artists intend to do to remain a higher status, often the common piece of jewellery being either gold chains or rings. Here Drake is able to manipulate this by displaying his way of fitting into the rap genre just from his desire outfit to wear in his own video, as it not only displays wealth but his idea of a successful, attractive image.
Cinematography is another aspect in Drakes video that can display how the music video is conventional to the rap genre. Here we are able to see the use of the camera style being a shallow focus we are able to see the women blurred dancing the background. The blurred effect here is conventional to the rap genre as women are represented as sexual objects in a number of the rap genre videos. This is because of the way the rap artists gain respect and popularity. The fact that Drake is shown in the front in full focus shows that he is priority in the shot. This means that he himself aims to be the main artist and wants the women to look like his possession. This is why it is important for him to be able to be conventional to the rap genre as it is important that he is able to appear as the dominant character. Mise-en-scene also supports this as being conventional to the rap genre as the positioning of the characters are important in this particular rap genre. This is because the women are again used just to raise the main male artists appeal as he has lots of women dancing around him in the music video it raises the idea that he is attractive, successful, rich and has a lot of women after him. Having the women behind him also represents him as being very powerful and in control of the situation which connotes the rap genre as he is the main focus again and is able to dominant the situation which in all rap music videos is normally what happens.
When talking about the rap music video genre we are able to see how mise-en-scene is able to manipulate the emotions in the music this is through the perfect example of the facial expressions sector. The image here shows a prime example of a close up of Drake and how the emotions can be manipulated in a scene to make the narrative and portrayal of the artist appear in a certain way. Here Drake is represented as being very aggressive as you can see by the expression on his face that he is rather angered and the audience know this as it relates to the particular lyrics being represented as well. This is due to the fact that people are able to get a clear understanding of how he is reacting to the music industry. He is not happy which displays a sort of rebellion through the fact that most rap genres are able to incorporate a sort of rebel's streak as you able to see most rap artists sometimes bring up sensitive subjects like politics, war and drugs.

Other examples of mise-en-scene are of those that produce specific lighting in a video. In Drakes music video we see flashes of lighting that connotes a psychedelic effect which may resemble a rap artists lifestyle. Through the use of the flashing red-negative lighting effect Drake appears very blurred and unfocused but the background remains just outlines of the city buildings which can display how confused and lost he is in the world of the music industry. This is a common convention of the rap genre as Drake can display himself as being misjudged and not understood in the music world. Many other rap artists think of themselves us misunderstood also and display this through there own music and there videos. The psychedelic aspect of the lighting may display how Drake is most likely to use drugs in the type of lifestyle he lives due to the fact that he is a rap artist. This is conventional to the rap genre as often they are seen and known for there drug and alcohol abuse. This is also supported by how people are to pick up on the lyrics in there songs, often linking back to sex, drugs, partying and money.

Emotion can also be displayed through the use of editing. We are able to see this through the amount of effects that have been added to Drakes music video to make it appear more violent and dangerous. The way is positioned against the flame effect can show how trapped and caught up in the fire. This may begin to exaggerate the effect of being trapped in the music industry in particular being able to survive the effects and pressure of the industry which may imply that he is a strong character. This is a common convention of the rap genre, not just because of his ability to be able to fight against all the hate and pressure he has against him but also how well it look in his music video. The special effects in the music video makes it look more eccentric and expensive. Which again relates to how most rap artists stereotypical want to be portrayed.

The editing not only shows how much he is able to appear as strong but to also display how he is able to manipulate the shot to focus it entirely on himself. The mirror shot can almost be a continuous stride of how he feels trapped in the music industry. In deeper meaning he may be showing his audience how he has to compete with himself on a regular basis to try and fit in with this particular industry. This is conventional to the rap genre as it shows how much he is able to struggle with as this high valued artist. Rap genres often relate closely to personal problems that may effect their audience members aswell as themselves. Giving there audience something to talk about. Overall rap videos contain a lot of performance aspects and very little narrative as most of there story comes across aggressive through the actions, facial expressions and special effects that are displayed in a very particular way. The way that rap artists are generically seen in there music videos and how they are wanted to be portrayed through there overall image.

The Fray is an alternative rock band genre. They consist of a number of different band members that play instrumentals and sing in a group. When you first think of rock you may expect a very raw and edgy kind of band, full of style that is quite dark and punk. This overall is not the case for The Fray as there are alternative, which consists of them being able to give a calmer sort of outlook on the music, often being similar to bands such as Coldplay and Snow Patrol. We see rather slow and gentle songs rather then just having to deal with very abrupt and powerful songs.
The mise-en-scene plays a huge part in the scenes and are shown to portray the alternative styles throughout this whole video. Here we are able to see 4 of the band members standing together with there instrument. The setting that can be seen here displays a very plain white background this is to show how much of a raw subject this is as we are able to see it in all it's innocence. The main reason why this is conventional to the rock alternative genre is that there music videos usually tend to focus on emotion and the performance of the band members, for example through the use of iconography as we are able to see how the band members each have there own instrumental which shows there own talent and ability to there audience. This is why it appeals to there target audience as they are able to focus on showing off there talent through the use of there instruments. Overall it is stereotypical to the alternative rock genre as it enables the audience to see how the instruments are played and how much music is a big deal to the members of the band.
Cinematography can also show how the alternative rock genre is conventional as it is able to display in particular a panning shot which allows the audience to be able to see the camera zoom very closely to a woman's blank expression. This overall connotes to the typical rock alternative genre as it enables us to get an understanding of the narrative they are trying to give off in there video. Being focused on strong emotions throughout the video, giving the audience the feeling of truly looking into someone through a panning shot really resembles the extremity the band is trying to present in there own music video representing there own feelings toward issues and presenting them lyrically and visually. This overall connotes to the alternative rock genre as it is not what is necessary appealing and attractive in the music industry but it displays a raw and edgy way of showing how emotion can be manipulated.
The cinematography can also be manipulated to be either far or close to a subject or setting. In this case the band have decided to include a number of really close, focused faces. This enables the audience to be able to see a clear understanding off how much emotion they are presented in there music video. The fact it clearly shows the facial expressions as well counts for how much they want to be valued for there take on harsher issues in the world such as depression. Overall it relates to the alternative rock genre as we are able to see how much they are able to represent more sensitive issues but in a way that makes it acceptable and sincere to there audience.
Editing is something that is able to make a music video seem more technologically advanced this is due to the way that it represents more skill and thought when going through the stage where everything is being placed together. Here we are able to see the words 'scared of death' placed together. This ultimately is a prime example of what makes this band so unique and so particularly conventional to the alternative rock genre. This is due to this particular editing effect is about a very darker topic such as depression and death. This lets there audience feel reassured while watching this video as they can relate to the fact that it is okay to be scared about things such a death. This is also a great way to get in touch with there audience on a more personal level as it enables them to be able to concentrate on how much there audience can relate and build a relationship with the band. Again this is conventional to the genre as they are likely to talking about darker subjects like 'The Fray' have done here in a way that gives of a great message to there audience that they are not alone and that they can get help from other people.
The way that mise-en-scene, in particular the lighting can effect the atmosphere of the music video can be seen through the example of this image. Here we are able to see a very young, female child looking rather closed in on her self and scared, as the transition begins to change, the lighting drastically increases. This shows how the little innocent girl is being effect by the sensitive topics in and throughout the music video and song. We are able to gain a more positive perspective that the band is trying to present through the increasing bright light it gives the audience a sense of hope that as a person suffering from grief and sadness there is away out, which is what the light represents, this is convention to 'The Fray' in particular as in this music video they are focusing on there ability to make there audience feel better about themselves which is what there aim was in this particular music video.
The whole video in particular displays a very intense editing technique that makes the whole video seem very artistic and surreal and that is montage. The whole video is shown to be a number of different clips fitted together to create a very smooth and emotional montage. It is displayed in a very pure and beautiful manor which is conventional to this particular genre as it enables the audience to find peace and enjoyment in the fact that this video is a piece of art with real meaning behind it instead of just something to promote there music. In addition to this in the montage we are able to see the mise-en-scene, by example the facial expressions of a young boy looking rather sad and depressed. This enables him to be able to be portrayed as very sympathetic and the audience will be able to feel this towards him. Overall this may create the effect of him being seen as very vulnerable and this is exactly what is conventional to the alternative genre, as it is known for representing sensitive topics and characters in and around there music videos.
Another addition of the mise-en-scene in the music video for the genre alternative rock is the positioning of the characters. Here we are able to see a clear representation of the endless amounts of blank faces staring up at the audience, this again creates a great sense of togetherness even though it may be because there joint together through upsetting reasons the band and genre have appealed to there target audience as being a band that understands and wants there audience with personal problems to know there not alone.
Finally we are able to see how the band uses the mise-en-scene particularly costume, to conform to there desired genre. Here the main artist of the group is seen playing the piano in a plain dark top. This is a opposition of the very plain white background which could suggest how he is fighting a dark issue himself and has been through bad times and made it out at the other end, this may be his message to the fans and as it fits in well with the conventions of alternative rock we are able to see how 'The Fray' is fitting very hard to relate to there audience on a more personal level through the particular meanings behind the song and video, which is very conventional to this particular genre as other bands follow this ideology too, Coldplay and Snow Patrol being prime examples.

The final video I am going to analyse is Demi Lovato's 'Cool for the Summer.' This classic pop tune has been recently published to her audience and it shows Demi's style as alittle more edgy and mainstream compared to her past songs and video's throughout the video there are alot of sexual and rave references which are what make this video a very conventional fit to the pop genre.

As a part of her new image, we are able to see how Demi has manipulated the costume in her music video to make herself appear more sexually. This is due to the very tight and flattering black leather body suit followed by the lace up heals and short wet-look hair style. Her makeup is put on heavily and really overall she just looks very attractive and healthy. This may not only appeal to her female audience due to them being rather envious of her new edgy look in the music video but because we are able to see her as being rather provocative in her clothing which may also appeal to a male audience when watching her. Overall this fits extremely well in the pop genre conventions as it enabled the audience to be able to see her with very little on, as well as being very done up and attractive which is also very mainstream and stereotypical to the pop genres.

In this particular crowded scene of Demi dancing we are able to see how her use of mise-en-scene is used to portray how facial expressions can be manipulated in the scene where Demi is enjoy herself and we can see her with a smile on her face, her body language is also very positive suggesting she is having a good time out partying followed by the way she is very up close to the people around her, demonstrating her as having a lot of friends and even insinuating that this is the kind of lifestyle she leads. This leaves her audience feeling very in on the fun, because if they see there idol having a fun time then they want to be apart of that and the happiness transfers onto them. Overall this is very conventional to the pop genre as it shows how much a facial expression alone can suggest how much a pop artists is portrayed to enjoy there life and be extremely happy with what they have and what they own.
The mise-en-scene presented in this mid shot allows Demi to really show off her privileged and successful life as her audience have continued to see throughout this video. Her we are able to see how the iconography of the car allows her to appear rich and very well off in life. The car looks very expensive and fun, again portraying her exciting lifestyle. This is overall very conventional as we not only see expensive things in Demi's videos but other successful pop artists that continue to produce music videos that make there lifes seem perfect, Demi does not only having the iconography in the scene but also the setting and atmosphere it creates by all the other characters being in the scene. We are able to see the car filled up to max, which displays her as having a lot of friends and fun, not only this we see other people in the back that appear to be almost running in her direction. Which overall shows us as the audience that she is a popular person which again is a very common convention of the pop genre.
The lighting can also be seen as being club like and pop. The way the bright neon purple lights are seen moving to the beat of the music shows how much the music video is supposed to represent a club scene. The way that the light is repeated shown means that Demi really wanted to incorporate the fun and dance side into her music video. This enables her audience to be able to see what makes a scene seem and appear more club and techno. Which would appeal to her younger, teenage audience as they would look up to her as having a very fun and busy life, full of partying. Overall this relates to the pop genre as it fits in with the conventions of being able to create an atmosphere that appears fun and upbeat.
The cinematography of the scenes in the music video are able to manipulate the emotions and feelings towards Demi as an artist. Here we are able to see the shallow focus represented in the clip. This enables the audience to see her as blurred maybe to represent how fast and busy her life is that she doesn't get time to stop and have a break and see things clearly but in fact she is one big blur in a hurry to carry on partying and enjoying her life, in addition to this we are also given the impression that because she is at a rave there may be drug influenced which conclude how much of a party animal she is. The blurred effect may insinuate how much drugs and alcohol she has consumed and cause her vision to blur. Overall, even though the pop genre isn't heavily influence by how much drugs and alcohol is in a video it is still rather suggested through the videos and music, meaning that this concept of the video still fits the typical conventions.
Editing is something that can be put in place to make something look a certain way and create an atmosphere for this in the process. This is seen in Demi's music video 'cool for the summer' as it enables the artist to give of the impression that everyone her is reckless and having fun. The use of the 'rec' editing filters and the fuzzy camera screen shows how many characters are being displayed as drunk. Here we are able to see how much they are under the influence and how much they are able to be seen as recording there own thing, supported by a handheld shot, the whole atmosphere of the video is very lively, which connotes to the pop genre as it makes the audience look up to this sort of behaviour making them believe it is socially acceptable nowadays to this, followed by the fact that the audience believe this is one way to really truly let go and have fun.
The cinematography, in particular the image shown here of Demi herself displays how much of an impact she has on the overall music video and narrative throughout. We are able to see a very darkened shot of her very close up which just about shows of her alluring facial feature and hand near her mouth. This overall creates the exaggeration on her eyes which appear to be staring at the audience, this makes the audience feel closer to the artist and it almost insists that they are doing this to create a very welcoming conclusion and they audience will feel apart of her video, as this particular look, looks as if they are able to invite the audience into there party life. In addition to this the body language of the character displays how much she wants to appeal to the audience that may find her attractive and very alluring. She is biting her nails in a way that appeals to the audience as it looks very sexual and may invite the audience further into making them feel they are 'invited' into her world through the facial expressions and close up shot of her.
The final aspect of mise-en-scene, is able to show the true unity and overall message for this particular song and music video. We are able to see how the characters are positioned in a way that makes them appear as very united and together. The fact Demi is in the lead shows us that she may be the leader of the packed followed by a number of other girls that may appeal to an audience as it enables them to be able to be influenced by a number of different people and friends. In addition to this we are able to see them as having a rather empowering image almost as if they are in a riot or fight heading into there battle. Overall it connotes to the pop genre as we are able to see the intensity of how a crowd of women dressed in revealing clothing can really influence the people and the atmosphere of the video overall giving it a very satisfying message to its audience, that it is fun to get drunk and party with a group of friends.

Overall through the analysis of these three different genres being, rap, alternative rock and pop. We are able to see and take note of how many of the different elements vary and appeal specifically to there desired target audience. Throughout the rap genre we have learnt that technology plays a huge part in the making of the video. A lot of the setting is done by green screen which can enlighten the rap genres particular audience as it enriches the locations and settings as the artist can be placed anywhere they want just through green screen alone. Following this we are able to see how much Drake uses different technological, futuristic effects to contribute to his music video. For example he uses the different coloured backgrounds and sped up city scenes to be able to demonstrate a very fast paced and intense music video that lets the audience realise how busy and extreme his life is. Moving on to alternative rock we see the fray use technology to add font onto there video, this enables them to bring up sensitive subjects and create a closer, personal relationship with there audience as they are able to see how much of a difference it can make to talk about such an intimate thing that a lot of people may be dealing with. Finally we see Demi's use of technology through the use of her filters in the music video 'cool for the summer.' This enables the audience to see how much of this particular recording effect can contribute to how much and how well a music video comes across in the pop genre as it creates a sense of togetherness and partying which is liked highly by particular audience as it is not serious it is more of a fun and welcoming act. Overall music videos are able to appeal to there desired audience due to the specific relationships they build. Either through anger, world wide issues, jealousy or even mental illness we see how artists will either create a friendship with there audience making it seem like they are very similar in ways or by the fact that they can relate to there problems and seem to have fun with them for example in Demi's video. This can also go the opposite way as it can be seen through Drake's intense cold jewellery that may make some audience member envious of him. Overall I have gained a lot of inspirations for my own music video idea as I now know that it is important to incorporate specific genre conventions that my audience would favour over. In addition to this I need to be able to create a clear difference between how much the audience will relate with the audience and how much the audience may be jealous and want what the artist has. This is will a struggle to create but if done successfully will be worth it in the end.

  1. This post demonstrates a good understanding of how music videos use a variety of micro elements to build a relationship with an audience. You have analysed the three music videos well and you have considered the role of the audience and conventions well.

    Aim-
    1) Watch SPAG
    2) Consider what ideas/inspirations you have gained from your analysis and what ideas you would like to incorporate within your own production.
