As a group we decided that it was very important to be able to work together as a team and discuss ideas together. Not only to try and share the responsibility for planning the music video but to also keep everyone up to date with what was going on in the production of the music video. The fact that we got together soften to discuss matter meant that any issues could be resolved very quickly and urgently without there having to be any conflict within the group. The group meetings didn't just keep everybody in the known but it also provided the group with a very organised and efficient music video. We were able to organise what and when everyone did there own jobs and this allowed us to finish things very quickly and move onto the next thing. We made the group meetings table to organise what was happening and make a note of it for future references. This enabled everyone to know exactly what was going on and prepared people to present the group with particular ideas that they wanted added into the music video.
In conclusion as a whole everyone felt that they had equal say into what happened and what is being contributed into the music video and the production of it. Everyone was happy enough to go to the meetings and this saved us a lot of time when trying to get things organised and presented in a short amount time. Personally I enjoyed that we all had a shared responsibility when it came to turning up to these meetings and having time to conclude what would happen to us as individuals for not turning up etc. I personally thought that this was a great way to take the responsibility of off myself, because if some members on the group didn't want to participate then it meant that it would be on there terms to try and contribute back in the group. Although I felt there where no issues like this as everyone was very eager to do well and get there ideas across. Overall the group table benefited us as it allowed us as a group to continue with the work that we had planned but also helped us by making a note of things that we had already planned so we was able to go back to it and look over what had been said and what we had planned to do for that particular thing whether it be the song choice and filming days. I found that being able to sit down as a group made it easier for me to share the ideas that I had as it would be the perfect time to suggest something new or make any changes and discuss them without making drastic decisions alone. This was crucial to me as in some scenes I had to film alone and the group meetings made it easier for me to consult with the other group members that we all had the same idea and felt that it was going in the right directions. The same applied when editing, as sometimes we didn't all have the same time to go up together so usually I would go up and edit the footage that need to be pieced together although I had to always send clips to my group members and show particular parts I thought where finished to get a very good response as to whether it actually was or not. In conclusion the organisation skills that this has helped us with overall made us stay part of a time and enabled us to help each other to go on and try and create something that was of good quality.
A risk assessment allows me to assess what type of precautions we need to take as a group before setting out on our own filming days. This allows me to know and prepare for the worst and come up with something that could be done to replace and correct the risk that may happen in the particular scene.
There are a number of additional risks that we did encounter while filming. These where mainly due to the weather. While filming outside and in the rain the main focus was on the actual equipment. The rain and heavy winds made it not only hard to get a correct shot, but there was a risk of the weather actually effecting the quality of the film and how well it works. The actual camera being used in the rain was a huge risk that made us be extra cautious when using it in the rain. The wet weather not the lens meant that it was a possibility that the camera lens could get damaged and ruin the picture quality. In addition to this the water exposer to the camera could overall cause it to break completely meaning that we would have to replace the existing camera and this would cause a delay in the filming we had left to do. I resolved this issue by taking an umbrella with me this meant that as a camera man, I used other resources to avoid damage to the camera and this meant that the equipment stayed in good condition and wasn't broken or ruined by the weather. Overall I have learnt that as a member of a filming crew the process of filming a music video isn't just to consider problems that can occur in the shot and ruin it such as costume or particular lighting issues. The safety of all people involved is a main issue that is often forgotten about. For example if we wanted to film in the middle of the road there are many issues that we needed to tackle first, such as how would be able to achieve a good quality shot successfully without putting any other people at risk of becoming injured. In addition to this we had to consider what type of effect the weather and other natural elements would have on the overall atmosphere of the shot, but we also didn't realise the effect it would physically have on the equipment. The overall use of the risk assessment allowed us to work together as a group and discuss what was most important thing about creating a safe environment for ourselves and the actors involved.
Before even beginning to plan our music video thoroughly. We need to evaluate other music videos of all different genres. This will involve analyzing a number of music videos that can create something which allows me to gather the necessary information needed to create a successful music video. In order to create a very realistic music video I need to look at examples from real artists themselves. This will enable me to see what sort of this are crucial when creating a music video and what do I need to prepare myself for. In addition to this my inspirations for the music video come from the fact that I like the idea of my own music video being original and creative. So I have tried to take very unique aspects of each video and turn it into my own. This may not only help me to provide good ideas and inspirations for my own music video but it widens my knowledge at what type of music videos I would have to compete with in this time and age of the music industry.
In this particular music video we see a story of two girls that are very close to each other and share a good bond with each other. The key part in this music video that I see as inspiration is the idea that the character in this music video is represented in a very sympathetic way. As the women are seen building a relationship it is suddenly taken away. This would leave the audience feeling very sympathetic towards the artist and the characters in the music video. The particular representation in the music video of 'The Head And The Heart - Another Story' allows me to consider how I actually want my own artist to be represented. In this case I want her to be represented in the same way, as someone who is seen in a sympathetic light. This enables the audience to build a relationship with my artist through the use of emotion. The particular way to do this has been inspired by this video. The fact that they have an older actor portray the same woman acts as an emotional barrier to the audience as they are able to see that same character long for the company of there friend even in there elderly years. This acts as a very heartbreaking representation of the character which will ultimately stir emotions in the audience. This particular way of representing a character/artist would work well in my own music video as it enables the audience to feel like they have a personal bond with the audience which will lead to them feeling empathy for her, when in my case - her partner dies and she is left to grieve over him.
Theorists are people whom study particular elements of a topic in great detail, in this case I am observing Dyer's star theory in Ellie Gouldings - How Long Will I Love You. Dyer's theory consists of labeling artists as being extraordinary and ordinary. This particular statement means that artists are portrayed down to earth but also as living as luxury or being 'unhuman' with talent, passion, wealth etc. The way Ellie has been portrayed in this music video, has inspired me due to the fact that she is seen playing an instrument. This portrays her as someone who is famous because of her talent not just because of how she flaunts herself. This is crucial in building a relationship with a younger audience as they may look up to her for her talent not just for her physical traits. This is something I wish to incorporate in my own music video, due to the fact that I know playing an instrument will appear to my target audience as they will see my artist as someone with actual talent. Some one who deserves to be famous, not just because of there upbringing and appearance. In addition to this the whole theory of an artist being portrayed as 'ordinary' to an audience is also influenced by Ellie Goulding's use of filming equipment. This is due to the fact that she used a phone to film her whole music video, which is the ultimate relateable thing she could do for her audience as it supplies an element of normality in her music video. Overall I aim to have my artist play a similar instrument as her to attract and gain a very relatable label to her as a person as well as an artist.
The particular narrative style can also be an influence to me as someone who wants to focus there music video on narrative based performances. Gabrielle Aplin is an indie artist who creates the perfect narrative inspiration in her music video 'Please Don't Say You Love Me.' This particular music video is heavily narrative based and is very stylistic to the indie genre that I want to create for my own music video. This enables me to analyse the way Gabrielle Aplin creates a very indeph narrative that is very emotive and realistic. One thing I was very inspired by from this narrative storyline was the fact that it portrays a very realistic relationship, this is something that I want to create in my own music video. In 'Please Don't Say You Love Me' the couple is seen arguing as well as laughing, which would be alot more influential to my audience as well if I followed this style. The idea that the audience can listen and watch a music video with this exact style will lead them to believe that this artist is in fact 'normal' and doesn't have a 'perfect life' which involves two people falling in love and living 'happily ever after' I am now influenced to encourage my audience that the healthy and 'perfect' relationship that my artist had actually does contain all types of emotions such as love and happiness as well as anger and grief. This will ultimately show my music video to be alot more fitting to the style that the audience are most likely to relate to.
Brave is a song from Sara Bareilles that portrays a very upbeat and influential atmosphere to its audience. This particular music video, allows me to look at the particular conventions that lead to the ideology that everyone is unique. While watching this music video I am able to see a group of different people being crazy and dancing to the music and just 'letting go' This people are of all different ethnic backgrounds. There are men and women. There are people of all different ages and sizes being seen dancing in public places. This overall idea is something that I find really fun and interesting. This particular type of message is something I wish to add into my own music video as it provides a music video with more normality. This overall enables us as an audience to let go ourselves while watching this and just really enjoy the message behind it. The particular conventions that enable me to feel very inspired is the locations and the way the artist is dressed. The fact that the particular events in the music video are happening in very 'normal' settings like city's and shopping centers relate well to the audience as it shows that wherever you are no matter how crowded or unusual that place is you can be yourself. The other convention I mentioned was the artist's costume. This is convention to her theme of being 'weird' and happy for it. This is something that I want the audience to feel in my own music video. This will be down through particular indie conventions. These will include the particular locations chosen in my music video like London and on particular occasions the costumes of the artist ill be convention to the same ideology of being different and embracing your 'weirdness.'
Finally the last element that I wish to incorporate into my own music video is the micro elements. 'Beyonce - Halo' is one music video that portrays the element of innocence really well just through the particular micro-elements and lighting used in the music video. This type of lighting in the music video is one thing that has really influenced me due to the fact that it can really manipulate the whole atmosphere. In this particular music video 'Halo' the audience are able to see that the majority of the music video is edited and filmed to look very angelic through the micro element, lighting and colour. This ultimately shows the audience that the artist is in fact very vulnerable, again creating this sympathetic idea towards Beyonce as her audience will not only feel sorry for her and portray her as the vulnerable and innocent one, but they may also look at her as someone who has been through the same things as them. For example in a bad break up most people like to blame the other person for the failure of there relationship, this relates to the idea that Beyonce is always going to be seen as the innocent one due to the lighting. This is something that I will try and add to my own music video as I aim to create the same type of relationship between the artist and audience.
In conclusion there are many different aspects that have influenced me. The idea that there are influential artists out there that can appeal to me in a particular way that will benefit me is very interesting. The planning of these ideas allow me to be alot more organised when producing my own music video. This is because it allows me to be able to plan what I want in my own music video without having to think too deep about it all. Not only does it provide me with a better plan that is more organised but I am now able to incorporate a more successful music video as I have taken elements and inspirations from separate, well known music videos that have actually done very well in the music industry so I am given guidance and encouragement from the fact that if they are successful then mine should hopefully follow in there footsteps also.
A filming schedule is important to make as it supplies a detailed plan for the crew member. Knowing what time and date allows us a group to have time to organise what we need. In addition to this it also provides us with enough time to get everyone together to check if they can actually make that particular date and time. In addition to this it enables us to plan the location, this gives that person time to set up there house or for a group member to double check if this location is suitable for the scene anyway. The content and action allows us to plan and have an idea of what particular shots are present as it gives us a more professional approach while shooting the scene. This type of planning also helps when writing down the particular shot type of duration of the shot. This enables us as a group to be quick and get filming over and done with effectively and fast. The type of costume, hair and make up planned allows us to inform the actors before hand how we want them to look. For example if we want our artist to look more done up then we may ask her to wear heavy make up which will make her stand out a lot more form the crowd. The iconography is one of the most important things on the actual filming schedule just because it allows us to know what to bring. We are also able to supply the right props for our actors as we are ultimately more organised and we are less likely to forget crucial props. As well as iconography in the scene we are able to write down and organise the exact type of equipment we need to bring such as the camera things and necessary things that will make the best shots possible.
While actually going out and beginning to film our music video. Not all shots we filmed where followed accurately from the film schedule. This meant that as a group we had to adapt to different things that we may not exactly expect to happen in a situation. This type of situation would be the weather and changes to the sunlight. For example as we are now in November we wasn't as prepared for endless days of less sunlight. This meant that filming after school times outside have become very difficult as we are unable to change the lighting of this as it is not artificial. This means that as the sun went down and less light was supplied to the camera the quality actually began to decrease The clips that we filmed actually became a lot more grainy then expected. This became known to us while filming the 'goodbye scene' inout music video. We wanted the lighting to be darker to demonstrate how sad this was and how much of an effect the overall departure of the couple meant. While editing these clips we released that the lighting effected the atmosphere and quality of the music video in a bad way. The fact that it was so dark caused the grainy effects and at times it was hard to even see the actors and artist involved in the shot. This meant that we had to re-film this scene in the morning where the sun was very bright and at its peak. Although the effect of the scene wasn't as dramatic we knew we had the opportunity to change this during the editing by adding a filter. In addition to this we had the same thing happen while filming the piano scenes. This meant that as a group we had to adjust the indoor lighting and make it a lot more accessible for the audience by changing the lighting to make it brighter. This meant that second time round the clips where a lot more clearer and had a better quality appearance. The main issue that occurred while filming was the fact that we all had busy schedules. The our artist was the one who actually struggled the most as she had her own media music video to film as well. This meant that as a group we struggled with timing and all being able to be there. Although this sometimes delayed us it enabled us as a group to do further research and planning while creating our music video. Overall the use of a filming schedule has helped to supply a very accurate plan of our different shots that are being used in the music video.
The storyboard is something which allows us to plan and edit our idea before actually filming the scenes our self, on paper we are able to discuss as a group what type of camera angles and lighting and actors we want in the scene. Making a music video requires very detailed planning due to that fact that you need alot of different scenes to create a successful music video that flows correctly, this means that each exact shot has to be planned out in extreme detail otherwise it may leave us not having enough performance footage or narrative performance etc. In addition to this the storyboard are a great way to save time while filming as the leave you knowing exactly what you have to do with the exact shots. Before even beginning the shooting of a scene the storyboards help us to organise what scene go where and what locations are needed, as a group this allows us to be able to use the plan as a demonstration as to where everything needs to be and who needs to be there.
While researching our music video we had to analysis alot of music videos. Particularly the indie genre music videos, this allowed us to be able to look up and research what were the typical codes and conventions of an indie genre, the cinematography in the indie genre music videos mainly were shallow focus shots to make the whole video seem more original and beautiful, this is something that we took into consideration while planning our music video as it allowed us to attempt to achieve the same effect of it being more majestic looking. Furthermore the mise-en-scene in the indie genres analysed in particular the costume was mainly very knitted and vintage looking. This type of clothing is something that can really change the dynamics of the music video into something that appears alot more old fashioned. The narrative is a very important aspect of the indie genre as it unfolds the story and allows the audience to really get inside the artists head. Through research I have found that many artists actually include a very touching and personal narrative into there music video. This is something that i latched onto very quickly, I wanted to make a music video that related to the indie genre and touched the audience in a personal way, this is because as a director/creator of a music video I felt that the audience would be more inclined to buy an album with this particular type of narrative. In order to see if this theory of mine would be successful I had to go on to do further research on my target audience, i did so by creating a questionnaire and vox poc's. This allowed us as a group to come up with a number of questions to ask our target audience ages 15-25 what type of things they liked or expected to see in a successful indie genre music video. Doing so gave us an insight into what our audience really wanted to see. At the end of this particular research we discovered that our target audience preferred the love/heart-breaking narrative this was a massive piece of information for us and it allowed us to finalise our narrative into being a love tragedy between the indie artist and her partner. In addition to the narrative we also where able to discover what type of location and setting our audience favoured in an indie genre, this helped us as a group to come up with the countryside and city locations that would be useful in our music video
When we came to creating the storyboard, from previous planning we where able to get straight into it. First we discussed what order the scenes would go in. We already had an idea of what this would be, but we wanted to be sure that we had it perfected. This allowed us to organise the scenes first being the older 'future' artist and a flashback into the artist and her partner having them meet, and fall in love, and finally him going to war and him dying as a result. The artist would then be devastated and be left heartbroken, finalising his death by spreading his ashes. The end of the music video would be of the older woman again looking at an image of the younger partner, because we were already adamant at what type of narrative we wanted and the order of the narrative. We started to get stuck in with the storyboard I wrote the information on the storyboard sheets while myself, Claire and Sara all took turns in drawing the images on the storyboard as it took longer then just writing out the notes below. While creating the storyboard we thought about what type of camera angels and movements would be successful in the music video, for example frame 13 a POV shot of the dinner table all set up and candle lit, this would provide the audience with an inside into the artists life, we planned on including this for that sole purpose alone as it provides the audience with a more free flowing music video, they will also build more of a relationship with the audience as they would be able to witness the footage through the artists eyes. Furthermore in frame 73 the artist is present in a corn field, the lighting below states that it is natural lighting. This means that we plan to have the artist in golden sunlight, its will allow her to be seen as innocent and this is what we want as the audience will sympathise with her being very natural and pure. To the audience it will make her look alot nicer which is what we want as they will feel alot closer to her as a friend and not an artist. The location is also something we discussed as a group and planned in the story board it allowed us to be able to manipulate the scene emotionally by just adapting the artist to the setting for example in frame 66 we decided to have the boyfriends death in the location of a field. This particular location was written down in the storyboard for a number of reasons. Firstly a field in a indie genre is actually very common and fits the codes and conventions well as it is a natural setting. This allows us as a group to develop this theory further as we can also relate the narrative to this particular choice of location. For example an empty isolated field will exaggerate the isolation of the partner in this scene, the audience can tell he is in a dangerous setting but they can't guarantee that anyone is there to help him due to the fact that he is alone in a field. This will overall add to the suspense of the situation making the audience feel even more empathy in the situation.
Finally as a group we were able to work together to create a successful storyboard that is actually very organised and put together, this overall makes the filming experience as each of us now have access to a joint made plan. Being a group of 3, whom work well together makes it easier to distribute the responsibility equally. In further detail we all worked together to create the storyboard, it was a joint discussion although we all had different tasks. I did the majority of the writing while we all took turns to draw the pictures to follow our information in a box, overall by working as a group we got it done rather quickly.

Although as group we did try to stick to the storyboard as much as possible we did have to change a couple of things to make sure the safety of our actors and crew members wasn't jeopardised. In the scene were our actor Morgan is meant to run across the field and get shot. He himself needs to use iconography, in this case a fake gun to provide the idea atmosphere which will provide a successful and war like setting. In the storyboard we planned to carry out and film this scene in a local field. While discussing it with the actor we decided it would be a better idea to film it on private property where there would be less civilians and a lower risk of someone not involved with the film to actually think there is a problem and end up calling the police or suspecting aggressive behaviour.
Throughout the music video we need to be able to create different lighting effects. This is because the scene and narrative never really stays the same it is constantly changing and evolving as the song goes on. In our case the narrative of our music video decreases in happiness as the story goes on. This enables to justify the lighting by decreasing it as the song goes on it may be a lot more darker in more intimate scenes, this is because the focus of the characters will be the main priority. In addition to this as a group we decided that the sadder scenes should be a lot darker as it portrays the overall feel of the music video. As a whole the overall feel of our music video will be noticeably different because of the lighting and the colours that we choose to put in particular places.
As a group through planning the music video and the particular lighting elements we would like to see present, we are able to discuss what is typical and conventional in the indie genre and what is not. High key lighting is something that is usually quite common in the indie genre, this is because it is very illuminating and can highlight key features of the scene. The lyrics in our artists song 'All that I could see is white' demonstrates where we actually got this lighting idea from. This is due to the fact that the word light connotes purity and innocence so we decided as a group that the more happier and innocently seen scenes would benefit best from the high key lighting. This is because it not only links in with the lyrics making the footage appear more white and bright but it also makes the artist look a lot more pure as the connotations of white are natural beauty and innocence and an overall impression of everything being perfect. We also planned to use it due the fact that it would conventionally connote the innocence that we wish to create in our music video. As a group during the planning we decided that the best places to use high key lighting would actually in fact be the scenes where everything is looking good for the couple, so the cute scenes that we plan to have of then having fun and portraying and very perfect image of them self, this enables the audience to see the artist through a certain light, the high key lighting will create a very intense atmosphere and show the audience that for the moment the artist and her partner are very happy and united together in these happy times, due to the high key lighting the artist them self may be displayed as being very vulnerable to the audience which fits very well to the scenes we plan to used them in, this is because the relationship is going to well and the light is very bright which portrays how much she is exposed to sadness, if something went wrong she would be left with her heart on the line and the audience know this just because if the particular lighting we plan to use.
The lighting and colouring can not only just be how we adjust the light in our music video but also the particular filters and effects that we may put over the top of the music video scenes, the saturation effect can really influence a video to look complete different. The lyrics in the song Salvation are 'The darkest fairytale' this is sung in one of the verses. This made it ideal for us to create a good contrast between the good and darker elements of the song. We wanted to be able to use dark filters to connote how the artist feels and to forebode what is about to happen. This is because darker colours are what ultimately tell the audience that there is something bad about to happen. It can also show particular elements of a character and sometimes make them appear more frightening or evil. Overall we planned to have this filter to have a true and genuine connotation that would be convention to the indie genre as we believe this particular genre tends to have a more realistic approach on life and relationships being both good and bad. We plan to have varied amounts of saturation placed on different clips as the story line gets a lot sadder, this is conventional to the indie genre as the lighting and colouring can often reflect on what is actually happening in the narrative. This allows our artist to be seen in a different way, the audience will begin to feel very guilty and sorry for her and this affection will be influence by how darker and gloomy the scene appears to be. The gradual light decrease doesn't only represent the narrative getting a lot sadder but also how much her emotions are getting darker as well, the audience will then feel a need to protect the artist and look out for her as she is in a very dark place now, overall the use of this effect can contribute to the theme we are inspiring to create.
Low key lighting is often used when presenting sadder scenes in the indie genre, as a group we have decided to follow this convention ultimately deciding that the low key lighting will contribute to the sadness of the atmosphere rather well. This was first influenced through the lyrics 'In the dead of night' This particular lighting does not only fit in with the lyrics but it demonstrates the narrative change and that sometimes not everything is perfect. This is ultimately what makes the indie genre unique as it adapts itself to real life situations and that is ideal to the audience as they will then begin to see the artist as more genuine. In addition to this the low key lighting will connote that something bad is about to happen. This is because darker colours such as black/dark red/brown all show that this isn't going to be a pleasant or happy time in the narrative and this is what makes it a perfect lighting to have represented in the music video. The idea that the lighting can influence a seen dramatically exists in the indie genre and it us something that as a group we have picked up on suddenly. We believe that by using the low key lighting will give a signal to the audience that something bad is or will be happening soon. This particular use of lighting will be present in the piano scene, this will allows the audience to see the artist playing the instrument in a more dull setting, this correlates the song and performance element so well as it really emphasis the pain that can be heard through our choice of song 'salvation' this in the end gives the audience a sense of sympathy as we see the artist singing in a very dark lit room. This will overall let the artist be viewed in a different light because the audience will see her as being this very sad and emotion person and they will look up to her as more of a person then an artist, this is because they will admire her for showing some true emotions rather then just making the music industry seem glamorous all the time. They will idolize the artist for being honest which will result in them having a better relationship with her and wanting to buy the music and continue watching the music video
The last particular lighting element we have used is probably one of the most conventional ones that is present in the indie genre, this is in fact the natural lighting, this is conventional to the indie genre as it creates a very beautiful yet simplistic atmosphere in the scene, as a group we have decided to use this when the singer is performing in the field, the sun coming down will be a perfect scene and contain very beautiful natural light which will make the artist appear as being very angelic and natural. This paritcular colouring and lighting was influenced by the lyrics 'Just a trick of light' this is because natural light is often described as trickling in or having a very softening approach. In addition to this natural light often gives of a more golden colour which not only fits in with the theme of the indie genre but it also connotes peace and happiness. This is because gold is seen as a very rich colour full of wealth. This mean that even though wealth is not represented in the terms of money. It can be seen that the artist has found peace and felt like she emotionally was very wealthy in love and happiness. The idea of this will leave the audience to feel like she is genuine and real as she isn't placed in very strong lights that make her look artificial but in fact she is somewhere where the sun is able to ignite her features just like it would do to anybody else. The overall effect of this will leave the audience feeling as though they are able to relate to the artist in the most common way possible as the sun is accessible to everyone, it gives them the hope that they can go out there themselves and create something that is beautiful, just like there desired artist, this overall presents the artist as someone who is very motivational to her audience and this constructs her ability to love and care for her young teenage audience and the people watching will notice this.
The whole idea that we had in mind when creating these specific scenes where in actual fact the idea of keeping them as natural as possible. We wanted the light to fit in with the scene that is currently happening, for example when the scene is alot more sadder with sensitive material init we would try and incorporate the lighting suitable for that either being a sunset or low-key lighting, this will add to the effect of the scene and make the audience feel a lot more sympathetic to the artist and pity her, this will ultimately lead to them feeing as though they cannot do anything to help her apart from support her by watching the music video and buying the album when it comes out. The happier times in our music video will be alot more brighter and this will allow the audience to feel a sense of profoundness towards the artist as they will see her overcome the sad times and feel like she deserves to be happy and this will play a crucial part in the overall feel of the music video as people who watch the music video will be able to feel and see the colour drain as our artist struggles to come to terms with the death of her loved one. Overall the main theme of our music video being emotions will be hugely noticeable to the audience as there will be a clear colour different between the scenes.
One of the key things that I have learnt while planning my music video is the fact that editing plays a massive role within the pace and excitement of the music video. If a shot drags out for two long and the same shots are put in place repetitively the audience are eventually going to get very bored of this and want something more then what that music video has to offer. Evidently as a group we are able to see how important it is to use editing styles in a unique and well paced manor that allows the audience to feel like they are on a journey with the audience and not just waiting around for something else to happen. As we are creating a music video we want the audience to feel as involved as possible due to the fact that it will supply a good amount of excitement.
The editing can be used to display the emotions in the scene, for example the use this particular type of editing is actually very conventional as indie artist tend to be as emotionally attached to there audience as possible. The use of this slow placed editing will actually drag out the pain and grief the artist feels and should ultimately pass onto the audience just through the longer shots. As a group we have planned to use this particular type of editing in the last chorus, which is a lot slower in tempo then the typical chorus of 'Salvation' by Gabrielle Aplin. This emphasis's the narrative successfully as we are able to see our artist grieve over the loss of her partner. The artist herself is actually represented a lot stronger through the editing. This is solely because of how we will portray her. For example if we used lots of shots very quickly placed together the overall editing pace would be very fast and give of the impression of being rather panicked and in distress, whereas she still looks emotional here but shes being portrayed as taking one step at a time and moving at a slower rate, maybe more in her own time. The audience will look look up to her as someone who is brave and can take on anything. They will see the artist as someone who can not only be emotional just like a 'normal' person, but she is also described as being a artist whom is very strong and independent, by slowing down the editing and just creating a scene with a slower pace.
Jump cuts are commonly used within the media as they take you from one shot to another, this is something that can completely add new life into the video as it takes the audience to a different perspective or location. This type of editing is very important while aiming to create something that is very entertaining. This particular type of editing is in fact conventional to the indie genre, as it is something that is not necessary used to create effect but more of the fact that it supplies the right amount of energy in the music video. As a group we plan to use this type of editing style on the line 'bring me back around again' this provides us to jump cut from the narrative to performance. It shows the different sides to the artist portraying her as someone with alot of talent as one minute she will be seen acting out a scene and then it suddenly jumps to where the artist is performing and singing the the audience. This will result in the artist being seen as someone who can multitask and the audience will become envious of this trait, leading them to watch on further as they become influence by her talent as an entertainer.
Time lapses are very common in the indie genre as they create an atmosphere that helps to show how society has become disconnected, this is why we have decided to add this editing style into our own music video. In continuation the indie genre does typically use this editing style of speeding up the footage to make everything seem panicked, very typically we normally see an artist stand in the middle completely still while the city or other location moves around her. We aim to use similar ideas but with abit more originally to them. For example during the faster tempo instrumental of the song 'Salvation' we plan to contain alot of sped up time lapses of London and other busy settings. This will ultimately fit in the with stereotypical rushed and frantic narrative that we aim to produce as a production team. This particular type of portrayal of an artist leads them looking very 'normal', for example she builds a relationship with her audience as they are able to see her in a way that creates panic and frustration, all these emotions lead into the same definition that the artist is not very put together, she is an emotional mess due to her emotions and this is very different to how audience members expect to see a celebrity performer who normally appear to have a perfect life, this method will bring the audience close to the artist as they are able to see her as someone who has been through alot and its still following her dream by being a performer, this editing style can result in the audience feeling alot more motivated and ready for all the problems that they are currently facing in there life.
The final editing style that we know we want to add in our music video is filters. This particular type of editing is done by adding a certain colour effect onto the music video. There is a range of colouring and effects that can be chosen to create certain effects such as black and white and even filters that can distort the image of the video. As a group we plan to use filter throughout the whole of our music video. This is because we feel like filters are conventional to the indie genre as they provide a more dull atmosphere - not boring, but drained of colour making the colouring of the clip appear a lot more natural. This is one reason why indie artists like to use filters as they can make there music video appear to be less vibrant and more 'normal' they may add a grey effect to make they weather look more miserable. The audience will then be able to relate further to the artist and build a closer relationship with her as they will see her as someone who knows what its like to live somewhere with 'rubbish' weather. In addition to this the audience will be able to see the artist in a more natural colour - more like everyday colouring such as grey, black and white. This juxtaposes other artists that may try to make the settings appear in a colour that is a lot more colourful and full of life. Whereas the theme we are sticking with in our music video is to make everything as neutral and raw as possible, making it easier for people to relate to.
All the editing styles that we plan to use in the music video all lead to one possible outcome. That is that the artist is displayed as 'normal' as possible. By normal we mean to discourage dyers theory of the artist being extraordinary, but in fact make it look like she is a normal person who is actually willing to live an ordinary life like many others. The slower editing style builds a relationship with the audience as it encourages them to take in all the details and emotions presented in that scene. They will notice how the slower paced editing contributes to her pain and take comfort in the fact that she is an artist who is able to be open about her feelings. The jump cuts will allow the audience to relate to the different perspectives the artist wants to display as well as the different settings. This will help the audience learn more about the artist and her favourite places to be as well as her home, by doing this they feel like they are learning more about her as a person and feel a lot more connected to her as they now have an idea of what town she lives in and what else. In addition to this we are able to add in the filters and the time lapse, to create a more stronger and noticeable change to the editing styles. This will show a clear example of how we want our artist to appear like someone who does have emotions she cant control sometimes. By the speeding of the shots and the time lapses we are able to see a clear idea of how our artist relates and builds a relationship with the audience as she is not shown in any artificial light. She remains very true to the natural setting and the editing helps its continue this image.
